More Than Just a Zoo
If you think the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) is just another zoo, think again. Located on the stunning shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe—just 10 minutes from the international airport—UWEC is a conservation powerhouse disguised as a family attraction.
Meet the Shoebill
The shoebill stork is one of Africa's most sought-after birds, and in the wild, spotting one requires considerable luck and patience (and usually a foggy swamp). At UWEC, you can observe these prehistoric-looking birds up close and learn about the centre's breeding program. Standing nearly 5 feet tall with a shoe-shaped bill, the shoebill is genuinely one of the most remarkable birds on Earth.
Rescued Animals, Real Stories
Every animal at UWEC has a story. The lions were rescued from poaching situations. The chimps were orphaned by the bushmeat trade. The elephants were found abandoned as calves. Learning these stories from the dedicated keepers adds a powerful conservation dimension to the visit. The "Behind the Scenes" tour (UGX 30,000 / approximately $8) lets you get closer than regular visitors and hear directly from the animal care team.
Perfect Timing
UWEC is open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM, but the best time to visit is early morning (8-10 AM) when animals are most active and being fed. Allow 3-4 hours for a thorough visit. Add the boat ride on Lake Victoria and a stroll through the adjacent Entebbe Botanical Gardens for a complete day.
